Affan Ramić (5 June 1932 – 19 May 2015) was a renowned Bosnian painter and one of the most significant figures of modern visual art in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Born in Derventa and raised in Mostar, Ramić became known for his expressive contemporary works inspired by the landscapes, culture, and traditions of Herzegovina.
Ramić completed his education at the School of Applied Arts in Sarajevo and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1957, where he studied under the prominent painter Marko Čelebonović. He later continued his professional development abroad, studying in Paris in 1963 and in Prague in 1967, deepening his knowledge of modern artistic techniques and European art movements.
Affan Ramić’s artistic work spanned several decades and explored a wide range of techniques, including expressive painting, collage, and delicate linear drawing. His early works were influenced by the landscapes and light of Herzegovina, while his later pieces incorporated textured layers, vigorous brushstrokes, and abstract elements, reflecting a personal vision shaped by both local tradition and contemporary art.
During the war in the 1990s, a significant number of his works were destroyed or lost. Ramić responded to this turbulent period by incorporating fragments of destruction — charred and broken objects — into his later compositions, transforming his wartime experience into visual narratives of resilience and memory.
In the 1970s, Ramić served as President of the Association of Visual Artists of Bosnia and Herzegovina and also led the Association of Artists of Yugoslavia, advocating for artistic development across the region. He later became a regular member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Throughout his career, Ramić received numerous honors, including the Šestoaprilska nagrada Grada Sarajeva (Sixth of April Award of the City of Sarajevo) and the Zlatna plaketa humanizma (Golden Plaque of Humanism), awarded by the International League of Humanists.
Affan Ramić’s works have been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions within Bosnia and Herzegovina and internationally. Institutions such as the Museum of Sarajevo Art include his works in their permanent collections. In 2021, an exhibition of his paintings was presented in Sarajevo to mark Statehood Day, highlighting his enduring influence on Bosnian art.
