The Emerald River of the Balkans

The Neretva River is one of the most beautiful and iconic rivers of the Balkans. Famous for its striking emerald-green waters, it flows for approximately 225 kilometres from its source high in the Dinaric Alps before reaching the Adriatic Sea near the historic town of Ploče. Along its journey, the river weaves through dramatic canyons, fertile valleys, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Southeastern Europe.

Born beneath the rugged peaks of the Zelengora Mountains, the Neretva begins as a cold mountain river before carving deep gorges through limestone cliffs. As it descends toward Herzegovina, its waters become the lifeblood of towns and villages that have flourished along its banks for centuries.

The river passes through Konjic, Jablanica, Mostar, Čapljina, and Metković, connecting diverse landscapes, cultures, and traditions. No landmark is more closely associated with the river than the magnificent Old Bridge of Mostar, whose elegant stone arch has become an internationally recognized symbol of unity, resilience, and reconciliation. The Neretva is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity.
