(8 March 1933, Polje near Travnik – 21 September 2003, Vitez) was a Bosnian and Croatian writer, poet, and literary critic. He is remembered as one of the most important literary voices of central Bosnia, especially known for his short stories and his deep connection to the cultural life of Vitez and the Lašva Valley.
Martinović was educated at the Higher PTT School and spent most of his working life in the postal service in Vitez, eventually becoming the director of the local post office. Alongside his professional career, he was actively involved in cultural work through HKD Napredak in Vitez and contributed significantly to its publishing and literary activities, particularly during the difficult wartime and postwar years.
His literary work includes poetry, short stories, essays, and reportage. His first poetry collection, Zvona i tišine, was published in 1962. Over time, however, he became particularly recognized for his short prose. Collections such as Tražio sam Augusta (1981) and Isus u podrumu (1995) reveal his gift for portraying ordinary people and everyday situations with warmth, subtle humor, and psychological insight.
Martinović’s writing reflects a strong sense of place. The landscapes, streets, and people of the Lašva Valley frequently appear in his narratives, not as mere background but as living elements of the story. His characters are drawn from real life, shaped by the social and historical realities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, yet presented with a universal human dimension.
Critics and contemporaries often emphasized his modesty and dedication to literature without pretension. His prose is calm, observant, and humane, avoiding ideological rigidity and instead focusing on the complexity of human relationships and memory.
In 1995, he received the Zlatna povelja Matice hrvatske for his book Isus u podrumu, a recognition of his contribution to literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After his death, his legacy has been preserved in Vitez through cultural events and a literary prize that bears his name, encouraging new generations of writers of short fiction.
